This is a romance that tackles a very sensitive issue: domestic violence. It had some part that were gut-wrenching, like the night Joy's mother died. We see it from a child's perspective, and I don't think that is something easily pulled off so I was impressed with how the author handled it. As an adult, Joy blames herself for her mother's untimely death and works to help abused women and their children. Joy was easy to like, and I thought she was realistic. Having gone through all she did as a child, it was no wonder she was burdened with guilt.

Then along comes Gabe who had grown up near her but never really knew her that well. Gabe was a sweetheart. There were no long drawn-out conflicts or misunderstandings--a definite plus in my opinion. I don't care much for romances where the whole book is full of couples arguing or not understanding what the other person meant, and sadly, I see this too much in romance books. This was not that kind of romance. The author gave me time to care about the couple before they confessed their feelings for each other. When the couple had their misunderstanding, it was resolved quickly.

Overall, this was a heartwarming book. I wanted a happy ending after all Joy had been through, and I wasn't disappointed.

The Gift of Joy edition by Valerie Maarten Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Valerie seemed apprehensive before I began my read of her work `The Gift of Joy'. She can certainly breathe a little easier, her work supports her conviction; I felt every moment of the love she put into it. Don't think powerful is a pat phrase to use in describing it, it is powerful, and much more, for a lot of reasons.

The story is very intimate. It could be called a `roman à clef', but she assured me, it is not her story, Joy is fictional. It is well enough that the story is lived every day, by millions of women and children. It is real life, and there is the power within it. I recognized the frightened child's guilt Joy carried into her adult life, in about the same way that Joy felt it herself.

The emotions it gave me, were sympathy, pleasure, fear, surprise, sadness, relief, angst, doubt, surprise, joy, terror, doubt, joy. In just about that order. Are you surprised I can place those emotions? Don't be surprised. That is close to the pace of the book, and it swells with those emotions at times. It is a deeply romantic story, every element of that definition exists, and those elements are very well played.

What did surprise me though, I kept the mental image of the doubtful, guilty little girl, throughout the entire story. So much so - she is so completely drawn - that I felt some shyness at the mature passages of the text. Joy holds her childhood terror almost as shields, and it was difficult to let her try to release them. When I read those passages through, and realized how important that intimacy was to Joy, letting go, to begin healing her own heart...I lost the shyness about it, and was glad for her.

The anguish of it all, and that is the final emotion, is found in the final plea Valerie makes; that we not turn away from emotional and physical abuse. Too many families suffer there, and some are sadly broken beyond repair. I may be a sympathetic ear for her lesson here. I have witnessed enough, first hand, to feel those pains. The author hopes to reach more with her loving work, and give some hope there, and I share my sincere support that she will.

'The Gift of Joy' is superb, I am very pleased to know it, and help Valerie Maarten share its message.
This story should easily have been worth 5 stars, but here are the things that bugged me. First, the editing & formatting were atrocious. I know it's silly, but seeing quotation marks instead of an apostrophe drove me crazy. Subject and verb were often mismatched. At times the pronoun didn't match the person being referred to. And then there were the sex scenes. They felt contrived, as though the author was thinking, "Ooh, I'd better steam things up a bit. That's what really sells books these days." Not for me! If you haven't noticed, I am quite disappointed with what should have been a wonderful story ... and a story that needs telling.
Enjoyed this book, not the type of book I usually read but found it a good romance novel with a happy ending.
The Gift of Joy
Semi sweet story about someone who has had a misfortunate past but is able to find love right under her nose.
What a great story! I bought/read it over the weekend, (wept) and thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Maarten's writing.

Joy was a great character, she grew in the story like all heroines should, and I didn't once want to slap her character silly.

Gabe was also a great character, nice hero, and I also didn't once want to slap him silly! (His sisters were a whole different story')

There was just enough pathos in the story that my husband had to bring over the tissue because I wouldn't stop reading and put down my ... Don't get me wrong, just because I'm a weeper doesn't mean that this isn't a wonderful story. As we get closer to the holidays I will probably re-read it.

There's nothing like the girl/boy next door to make you take a deep, romantic breath!
This book is well written, great progression, great heroine and hero. Poignant and deep, full of hope and some magic. Love it and have reread it.
A touching love story about coming to terms with the past and embracing a better tomorrow. Gabe and Joy are refreshingly real, down-to-earth people with courage and honor inside their hearts. Joy is a beautiful, sweet, caring woman who dedicated herself to helping others, but she is tormented by a heartbreaking childhood that still haunts her. The loss of her mother was a scar that never healed. Christmastime is the perfect setting for tender new beginnings between Joy and Gabe. (I loved the scene where she finally gets to play in the snow!) Her happiness is so innocent, something rarely felt until her friendship with Gabe. He is the strong arm she needed. A great story, well-told. I definitely smiled in the end!
